Snail Season
Christian Ward
After a downpour, impromptu
parapets of snails on the garden fence.
Others clinging to the wood.
The slow moving measuring
tapes are more than a free lesson
in mindfulness. The empty 昀氀ower
beds lack dens: No paper
vortices of roses to escape into.
No quiet libraries of apple cores.
No camera lenses of holly berries
to shrink inside. Look how
they accept the universes
in their shells, while we climb
ladders to take down the stars we put up.
